Built By Hand

drawer detailBuilt by hand means that each piece of furniture is made by me with care and precision according to exactly what the client wants. No mass producing of parts, but specifically selecting every piece of wood for its grain and color. All of the joinery is carefully chosen to fit the piece of furniture and stay together for many lifetimes.

Custom

I build custom sizes and variations of several of my standard pieces. I also build completely custom pieces using your ideas, sketches or pictures. Drawings can be done for a non-refundable fee of $50 which will be applied to the final cost of the project.

Construction

The construction methods include the traditional pinned mortise and tenon, the dovetail joint, hardwood dowel joinery and biscuit joinery. All drawers are solid wood dovetailed on all four corners with a hardwood veneer plywood drawer bottom. Solid wood drawer bottoms are an Maple Table detailoption at additional cost. Full extension ball bearing drawer guides are used for their ease of operation. Some cabinets are built, where appropriate, with the highest grade of hardwood veneer plywood. Standard case backs are made from hardwood veneer plywood. Solid wood backs are an option at additional cost.

Wood Choices

While most of my furniture is built from cherry, I also use maple, walnut, white oak , red oak, alder and mahogany. Other woods and special veneers are available on a custom basis.

Finishing

The feel of a piece of fine furniture is crucial to standing apart from mass made furniture. That is why all pieces are sanded to perfection first, and then finished using several coats of a hand rubbed oil/varnish. This finish not only feels wonderful, it is one of the easiest to repair if an accident occurs. If you prefer, a satin conversion varnish that is very durable can be sprayed on to increase protection. This finish is tough, but a little harder to repair if damaged. Additional cost will be quoted for conversion varnish.

Pricing

I will soon be putting prices of several of the standard pieces on the website. To get a general idea about pricing I have listed a range of prices for some of the pieces I build. There are always exceptions, and wood type and finish are just two of the variables in pricing.
